Vu en France

You know what a meeting is, but do you know what meetingitis is? This word designates the habit of organizing too many often useless meetings. In France we really like meetings (too) much! It is even said that directors (called “cadres” in France) spend 40% of their working time in meetings. But what is the use in spending those long hours spend up to table?
In many countries, the meetings are used to debated problems and to make decisions together. It isn’t necessarily the case in France. During the meeting, the boss is often the only one who speaks. The problems are presented and then everybody leaves… without knowing precisely what they should do about them. It is therefore necessary to organize another meeting to talk about it. Other times, chaos reigns in the meeting room but the result is the same.
So should we get rid of meetings altogether? Not necessarily. People work more and more on their own and meetings allow them to spend time with their colleagues. And some companies are now trying to make their meetings shorter and more efficient. Stand-up meetings, walking meetings, organizing who talks when… its up to you to come up with ideas.

Une sinusite ? Non, la réunionnite !

Translation: Sinusitis ? No, meetingitis...
And you? Do you think there are too many meetings where you work?

Did you know?
During work meetings, some people listen and participate whilst others read their emails, send text messages or even nap. According to a study*, 33% of directors have already slept in meetings.
